Flying Frugal

I used to be a pizza delivery guy. Considering that alternative, I’m pretty glad I’m unemployed. Unfortunately, the general lack of income means that I have to be much more frugal, especially when it comes to traveling to Magic tournaments. Like many of you, the rising cost of cards, gas, and literally everything has made it increasingly difficult for me to justify going long distances to a Grand Prix or Star City Games Open, especially when you consider my chances of doing well.

That hasn’t stopped me.

Chaos Draft!

This far into the block, everyone’s pretty much got a hang of how drafting Scars of Mirrodin block works. Wizards has turned the draft format on its ear by making the newest set of a block the first pack in the draft. But what if you started with Mirrodin Besieged… and got passed a pack of Alliances? Outside of praying that there’s still a Force of Will in the pack, what do you pick?

Start thinking now, because on April 2nd, you’ll get to make some difficult picks. Islandhome is running a Chaos Draft – or Wacky Draft, whatever you want to call it – where you’ll all get random packs to draft with from the past sixteen years of Magic’s history. That’s Fallen Empires to Mirrodin Besieged… with a few surprises tossed in as well.

Store Spotlight: FNC/”The Arena”

As you may have heard, Friendly Neighborhood Comic Shop is moving for the third time in its life. With the move comes a change in management – Jon Lorig is taking over the day-to-day operations and tournament organizing at the shop – and a change in name, too. FNC 3.0 is now known as “The Arena”, a name that much more represents its long history as a place where great Long Island Magic players have come to battle for years. But not everyone has heard the history of this shop that began its life in early 2007 at an unassuming location in the middle of Islip. The Arena is Islandhome’s first Store Spotlight. This one may take a more personal slant than the others, because I was there for this one from the very beginning.

Mirrodin Besieged Prereleases

Choose Your Side. Mirrodin Besieged prereleases begin at the stroke of midnight, January 29th, and stores around the Island will be holding events all weekend! This will be an interesting prerelease, because for the first time ever, you’ll get to choose a faction to represent at the event. There will be special Mirran and Phyrexian packs, and they’ll each only have cards with their faction’s watermarks in them (minus the foils, which don’t adhere to the faction pack they come from). You’ll get a prerelease foil of your chosen faction as well – Phyrexians get Glissa, the Traitor, and Mirrans get Hero of Bladehold.

A New Year with Mishra

Lodestone Golem didn’t cause ripples so much as he caused a tsunami. It was the most exciting time to be a Shop pilot since the printing of Trinisphere. Workshops had been in trouble – they needed something to revitalize them. While this gift would change things, the immediate question was: how do you properly utilize and exploit this card? How do you use Lodestone Golem to create a faster lock, a faster clock, an iron win? Lines would be blurred and our traditional definition of Workshop decks would go by the wayside.
